Is your Co-Worker driving you mad with negativity? 

Do you feel at times that you are behaving or speaking too negatively in the workplace?  Many of us have found ourselves doing so and fortunately we have the ability to recognise the affects of such negativity and adjust our behaviours.

A negative co-worker or a negative environment can affect our productivity, our motivation at work and ultimately the success of an organisation.  So what do you do if you are faced with a negative co-worker?  We’ve provided you with some tips to deal with this problem effectively now before it escalates into conflict and possible mediation of the situation…

  • Listen to the co-worker until they feel like they have been completely heard, even restate their sentiments.  This may in itself stop repetition. 

  • Decide if the co-worker has legitimate reasons for negativity.  If you decide they do, ask if they would like help to address the situation or problem.  Without providing therapy or advice, point the co-worker to books, the HR Manager or their Manager to solve the situation. 

  • If the co-worker just wants to complain, listen however set some time limits and then tell your co-worker that you prefer to move on to more positive subjects.

  • If you decide that the negativity is not legitimate, tell them so.  Advise them that you are concerned about the situation and care that it is affecting their work however you do not agree with their assessment of the matter.

  • Don’t spend time listening or helping a co-worker with negativity that you do not believe is warranted.  This will encourage continued negativity.  Just gracefully walk away. 

  • If the situation continues, you can suggest that the negative person seek assistance from their Manager or HR Manager.  If that fails, you may wish to do so, describing how the situation is affecting your work.

  • If negativity among employees is persistent and left unaddressed, you may decide that moving on to a culture and workplace that supports your professional performance is the best outcome.
